Dr. Antonio Toscano Orchid botanist
Dr. Antonio Toscano, an acclaimed orchid botanist, recently joined the staff of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. A native of Brazil, Toscano obtained his Ph.D.in plant systematics from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, through the University of Reading in 1994. Following graduation, Toscano lived and worked in the Brazilian state of Bahia for several years. During this time, he collaborated with Sarasota-based orchid botanist Dr. Carlyle Luer on a series of pleurothallid orchid projects. In 2010, Toscano moved to Cambridge, Mass., and served as a Lemann Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. He moved to Sarasota with his 16-yearold son, Enrique. What is your role at Selby Gardens?I am collaborating on two projects of international scope. One project, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is the “Global Plants Initiative.” The second project is funded by the National Geographic Society: “The Pleurothallid Orchids of Brazil: Contributions to an Inventory and an Understanding of Evolution, Ecology and Conservation.”What does that involve? Gathering massive amounts of data to arrive at a better understanding of pleurothallid orchids. My work on this initiative involved a month-long research trip to Brazil this summer, during which I conducted a study on the orchid diversity of the rapidly disappearing Atlantic rainforests of southeastern Brazil. It was both exciting and saddening to see what’s been happening. You’re a world-renowned orchid botanist. How does that happen? Orchids fascinate me. I think it’s just that simple. What fascinates you about orchids? I am intrigued by their intricate and sometimes bizarre floral morphology and pollination. I am particularly interested in the miniatures, especially the pleurothallid orchids. These comprise about 4,000 neo-tropical species, of which around 600 species are found in Brazil’s endangered Atlantic forest. Many are threatened with extinction, and many others are new to science. Can you give us some tips on orchid care? Show them love and use good sense. Beyond these generalities, my best advice is to talk to those with experience. Visit Selby Gardens and talk to our greenhouse manager and experienced orchid growers. What are some peak experiences in your career? I think I have several that qualify. My doctoral studies at the famous Royal Botanic Gardens-Kew, in London, was an amazing experience. My return to Kew in 2008, when I studied the techniques of DNA analysis, was another. My recent stay at Harvard University was unforgettable. Is there a spot on the globe where you would like to explore orchids? More than one! To list them all would fill a page. I’d like to continue to investigate the endemic orchid flora found in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. There are so many species to study and to be discovered in this fragile forest. Only less than 5 percent of the original cover remains, but what is left is extremely rich and unknown.
